Not at all. Many people mistakenly think that a Doula sweeps in and takes over, leaving out the important role of a father during the birth. Or they think that Doulas are only for women who are on their own.
Common fears for men during the birth are for the safety of the mother and the unborn child. Having a Doula involved can alleviate these fears as a Doula is able to provide reassurance and informational support before and during the labour. Father’s find they are often able to participate more fully with a Doula present, and can participate in a way that feels right and natural for them, not just what the current trends dictate.
The presence of a Doula compliments and strengthens the role of the father, it does not replace it.
